Sept. 30, 2001

Milwaukee, Wis. - The UIC men's tennis team built on its performance of last weekend as they posted a strong 5-9 singles mark - including a pair of back draw titles - while going 1-3 in doubles play at the 2001 Marquette Invitational.

Junior Nick Bodmer and sophomore Amol Desai led the way for the Flames as both recorded back-draw singles championships.

"Overall I thought the players showed great effort this weekend, "Head Coach Hans Neufeld said. "I was pleased with the way (Bodmer and Desai) came back to win the back draws. The first-round win by Jon Schmidt was also a big win.

"Even though are record didn't show it, I thought our doubles fought very hard as well. They just couldn't seem to put it away."

Bodmer rebounded from an opening-round 7-6 (4), 6-4 defeat to Nick Vuko of Valparaiso in No. 1 Flight competition, to take out Matt Kinst of Western Illinois and Peter Bong of Southern Illinois en route to winning the back draw. Both of his victories were closely contested matches with Bodmer claming each 9-8.

Desai, meanwhile, took the No. 5 singles back-draw title, posting victories over Tom Heidenberger, 9-8(7), of UW-Green Bay and Rob Coventry of Western Illinois, 9-8(5).

Sophomore Jon Schmidt gave UIC its other singles win, squeaking one out in his opening match in the No. 2 singles flight over Robert Gates of Chicago State, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6).

On the doubles side, Bodmer and Schmidt combined to Weber and Blankenbaker of Eastern Illinois, 9-8 (8) in the first round of the No. 1 doubles flight, before falling in the semifinals to Gill and Holsen of Marquette, 8-5.

The Flames are now off until October 13, when they take on Western Illinois in a team event at UIC.
