    VALPARAISO, Ind. – In its last game of the regular season, the UIC men’s tennis team (4-15/2-5 HL) were able to hold off Valparaiso (8-14/0-7 HL) and take a 6-1 win, leaving the Crusaders without a win in the Horizon League this season.

    “We won the doubles point and finished the match with good energy in singles to carry into next season,” head coach Hans Neufeld said.

    The Flames were able to come away with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions in doubles.  Rahul Kamath and Alexander Raa took No. 1 with Chris Baum and Eric Honert, 8-3, as Alan Reifer and Gautham Oroskar combined for the first time to defeat Carlton Lyons and Egan Hart, 8-1, at No. 3.  Nate Kirk and Scott Shepardson moved to No. 2, but fell in a tight battle with Kevin DeHerrera and Adam Whitmer, 8-6.

    In singles, UIC carried over the momentum to take its matches in straight sets.  Kirk started off with the first win as he overpowered Whitmer, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4.  Coming in at No. 2, Raa came away at versus Honert, 6-0, 6-1, while Reifer took down DeHerrera, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3.

    Oroskar captured his first win this season over Michael Woodson, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6, as James Li defeated Baum, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), at No. 1 for his team-leading 10th singles win.  The lone loss for the Flames came at No. 5, as Kamath went down to Siddarth Mehta in a three-set 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 final.
