Chicago, Ill. - The match came down to the wire, but UW-Green Bay emerged with a 5-2 Midwestern Collegiate Conference victory over UIC on Friday afternoon at the UIC Outdoor Courts.

"We may see them again," men's tennis coach Chuck Cunningham said. "This was by far the most enjoyable and competitive match we've had all season."

The Phoenix took a 3-2 lead heading into the final two matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. UWGB's Robert Shamelikian came from behind to earn a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory over Jon Schmidt (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) at No. 1 singles while teammate Victor Capota edged UIC's Nick Bodmer (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) at No. 2 singles for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) for the victory and the match.

"All we wanted was a chance," Cunningham said. "There were some great matches that resulted in losing efforts for us and I can't fault the guys for that."

Wade Clark (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) and Jason Kerr (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) earned the lone victories for the Flames at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively.

Clark defeated Tom Heidenberger, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 singles while Kerr upended Jason Wawryzniak for a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory.

"I was real pleased with the effort," Cunningham said. "A year ago this weekend, UWGB was so much better than us. This match shows that we've clearly improved."

UIC will be back in action tomorrow, as they will travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on Wright State at 1 PM.
