Northern Illinois Blanks Men's Tennis
April 17, 2001
Homewood, Ill. - The men's tennis team dropped a 6-0 decision at the hands of the Northern Illinois Huskies at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club on Tuesday afternoon. There was no doubles point in the match because of a lack of court time at the club. "It was a tough match," UIC men's tennis coach Chuck Cunningham said. "We battled hard and if we had a couple of breaks...the match could have gone either way. "Northern Illinois was just a better team and there's no shame in losing to them." UIC (6-15) had three matches that included a tiebreaker in a set, but fell on the short end of each of the contests. The first match that included a tiebreaker was at No. 1 singles where Northern Illinois' Raymond Van Wasbeek earned a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Jon Schmidt (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett). UIC's Nesar Nayak (Naperville, Ill./New Cambridge) pushed NIU's Brett Sitarski to the limit at No. 3 singles, but was defeated 7-6, 6-1 (8-2). The final tiebreaker match was at No. 5 singles where NIU's Jon Perlman emerged triumphant over Jason Kerr (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 (8-6) win. UIC will travel to Dayton, Ohio on Friday and will take on UW-Green Bay at 3 PM. Northern Illinois 6, UIC 0 SINGLES No. 1 - Raymond Van Wasbeek (NIU) d. Jon Schmidt (UIC), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
