Creighton Slips Past Men's Tennis, 4-3|
Feb. 29, 2004
Hinsdale, Ill.- Despite an awesome doubles performance and three rallies in the singles slate, the UIC men's tennis dropped a tight 4-3 match to Creighton at the HInsdale Racket Courts on Saturday night.
UIC (1-8) picked up their first doubles point since last October, thanks to Artsem Burmistrau and Karol Zarucki teaming for an 8-4 win over Richie Gonzalez and Vince Meens at the one spot and Pat Zufan and John Cincola pairing for an 8-4 victory over Tom McCarthy and Eduardo Pignatari.
But the Flames were unable to mount more than two wins on the singles side, even though all four of UIC's singles losses went three close sets.
Burmistrau and Zufan picked up the lone victories. Burmistrau is now on a three-match winning streak to run his overall season record to 6-1, while Zufan has won four of his last five in singles play.
Zarucki, Cincola and Sean Kreymborg rallied from close first-set defeats to handily take their second sets, but all three were narrowly denied a win. Both Zarucki and Cincola barely lost by 7-6(3) and 7-5 counts, respectively, in their comeback bids.
Yevgen Ryeznik was also close to a win, taking the first set against Gonzalez before dropping the next two, including a 7-6(6) heartbreaker in the final set.
UIC is back in action on March 6th to take on IUPUI at the Hinsdale Racket Courts at 6 p.m.
