Men's Tennis Earns First Victory of Season
Feb. 4, 2001 Detroit, Michigan - The men's tennis team picked up their first victory of the year with a 7-2 shellacking of host Wayne State on Saturday. The nine-point scoring system was used where doubles' wins count as one point. "It was a very satisfying win for us," UIC coach Chuck Cunningham said. "We still have a lot to work on - but the guys' mental toughness and poise pulled it out for us. "It was a great team effort and a great win." UIC received hard fought victories in singles action from freshman No. 1 Jon Schmidt (3-6, 7-5, 6-1), sophomore No. 2 Nick Bodmer (6-3, 7-5), freshman No. 4 Nesar Nayak (2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)), senior No. 5 Jason Kerr (6-2, 7-6 (4)) and freshman No. 6 Amol Desai (7-5, 6-2). Schmidt and Nayak later teamed up at No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-5 win. Kerr and Desai also garnered an 8-6 victory in No. 3 doubles action. The men's team will be back in action on Friday, as they will host Northern Iowa at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet club at 3 P.M. UIC 7, Wayne State 2 Singles No. 1 Jon Schmidt (UIC) d.
