Hinsdale, Ill.- Even after doubles dominance by the UIC men's tennis team in the early going, the Flames were unable to put away Horizon League rival Wright State as the Raiders squeaked out a 4-3 victory at the Hinsdale Racquet Club late Saturday.
UIC (3-3, 0-1 Horizon League) swept the doubles point to take an early 1-0 match lead. Ivan Kovalev teamed with Andy Lockhart at the top spot to grab an 8-4 win over Quincy Jones and Lance Koetter, followed by an 8-3 match taken by the duo of Paul Glendenning and Karol Zarucki and a clinching 8-5 win by Eric Fey and Sean Kreymborg over Kevin Teufel and Scott Hayden.
But Wright State (4-4, 1-0 Horizon League) answered back in the singles slate, taking four of six.
UIC was lead by Kovalev's strong singles win at the No. 1 spot. Kovalev beat Jones with a 6-3, 7-6(5) decision.
Fey continued to shine in his rookie year, playing the fifth slot and taking a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Pierangelo Presti.
Saturday's loss marked the first time this season that the Flames were defeated after taking the doubles point. UIC had been 3-0 in matches where they clinched the initial point.
UIC is back in action next Saturday versus Wayne State at 8 a.m.
