Men's Tennis Swept In Spring Opener
Jan. 25, 2001 Milwaukee, Wisc. - UIC men's tennis coach Chuck Cunningham scheduled Wednesday's dual meet against Marquette with one thing in mind. "We could use a match like this and find out what we have to do to get better," Cunningham said. "I wanted to get the attention of the players." Consider the mission accomplished. Marquette swept UIC on their way to a 7-0 victory at Helfear Tennis Stadium. UIC sophomore Nick Bodmer dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Peter Mojzis at No. 1 singles. The Flames' No. 2 singles player Wade Clark was forced to retire in his match against Bart Cordemeijer due to a groin injury.
UIC freshman transfer Nesar Nyak fell in his first match for the Flames as Marquette's Raj Gill defeated him 6-2, 6-1. Marquette also received victories from No. 4 Justin Holsen (6-2, 6-3 over Jason Kerr), No. 5 Brian Verban (6-1, 6-2 over Amol Desai) and No. 6 Kent Davies (6-0, 6-0 over Omar Husain). The Golden Eagles were equally effective in doubles action. The tandem of Mojzis and Gill teamed up at No. 1 doubles to down Clark and Nyak, 8-1. Cordemeijer and Verban proved to be too much for Bodmer and Jon Schmidt as they earned a 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Holsen and Davies then closed out the day with a 8-1 triumph over Kerr and Desai at No. 3 doubles. "We're doing exactly what we need to do in order to be competitive," Cunningham said. "We're working hard, but we need to do more." Marquette 7, UIC 0 Singles No. 1 Peter Mojzis (M) d. Nick Bodmer (UIC) 6-2, 6-2 No. 2 Bart Cordemeijer (M) d.
