KALAMAZOO, Mich. –The UIC men’s tennis team competed against Western Michigan on Monday at West Hills Athletic Club, but were unable to come away with the win as they fell 7-0.
"We battled well in singles, pushing three matches all the way," stated head coach Hans Neufeld. "We need to work on keeping the momentum once we earn it."
In singles, Alexander Raa faced Nadin Indre in the number 1 position, but fell 6-5, 6-2. Alan Reifer pushed his match with Andrew Cahn to three, but ultimately fell short in the number 2 spot, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Freshmen Carl Hedstrom competed in the number 3 position against Jim Beckwith, falling short 6-3, 3-6, 1-0. At No. 4, Isaac Lloveras faced Michael Treis, but was unable to come out on top with a final decision of 6-3, 6-2.
Freshmen Eric Pontow took his No. 3 match to three with Pablo Mora, but fell short 6-5, 3-6, 1-0. To close out singles play, Nicolas Aguirre was positioned at No. 6 against Matt Hamilton, but fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Through doubles matches, Raa and Hedstrom put up a fight against Indre and Stephen Payne at No. 1 before falling 6-1. Lloveras and Pontow dropped their match against Cahn and Treis at the number 2 position, 6-5.
At No. 3, Reifer and Maurizio Feoli battled until the end but ultimately fell short to Ruben Greiner and Beckwith, 6-1.
The Flames return home to face IPFW at the Hinsdale Racquet Club on Saturday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
