CHICAGO – The UIC men’s tennis team competed against DePaul in its first match of the season on Friday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, but were unable to hang on as they fell 6-1.
The Flames gave the Blue Demons their best effort, tallying a pair of wins during the day’s match. Carl Hedstrom went undefeated in play today when he first downed opponent Adam Reinhart 4-6, 7-6, 10-6 in singles at No. 3. Hedstrom then teamed up with Alexander Raa at the number 1 position to defeat Filip Dzanko and Jan-Willem Feilzer 6-5(5).
“Hedstrom sweeping both doubles and singles in his first collegiate team match was the highlight of the night,” stated head coach Hans Neufeld. “Both seniors, Reifer and Raa, competed well, also.”
In singles, Raa faced Dzanko in the number 1 position, but fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Alan Reifer took his No. 2 match to three with Kyle Johnson, but fell short in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 final.
Isaac Lloveras was positioned at No. 4 against Paul John, but fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Eric Pontow dropped his No. 5 match 6-3, 6-4 to Tim Corwin, while Nicolas Aguirre was unable to outlast Joshua Scramm, 6-1, 6-0 at the number 6 position.
Through doubles matches, Lloveras and Pontow put up a fight against Reinhart and Corwin at No. 2 before falling 6-4. Reifer and Aguirre dropped a 6-0 match to John and Schramm at No. 3.
The Flames return to the courts on Monday, when they head to Kalamazoo, Mich., to take on Western Michigan at 11:00 a.m. (CT) at West Hills Athletic Club.
