CHICAGO – The UIC men’s tennis team competed against DePaul in its first match of the season on Saturday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, but were unable to hang on as they fell 5-2.
The Flames gave the Blue Demons their best effort, tallying a pair of wins during the day’s match. Christopher Cole and Maurizio Feoli bested their opponents at the No. 4 and 6 positions, respectively, while Alexander Raa and Rahul Kamath won their match in doubles.
In singles, Cole faced Kyle Johnson at No. 4, taking the first set 6-4 and going 3-3 before retiring Johnson. Feoli took his match to three with Adam Reinhart and came away with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 final.
Isaac Lloveras was positioned at No. 1 against Filip Dzanko, but fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Alan Reifer was unable to outlast Mathias Hambach, 6-2, 6-3, while Raa dropped his match 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 to Sten Leusink. Kamath rounded out singles at No. 5 versus Jan-Willem Feilzer, but went down 7-5, 6-3.
Through doubles matches, Raa and Kamath captured a win for the Flames after defeating Hambach and Dzanko, 8-6, at the No. 1 position. Feoli and Reifer put up a fight against Feilzer and Leusink at No. 2 before falling 8-7, as Cole and Lloveras dropped an 8-3 match to Reinhart and Johnson at No. 3.
The Flames return to the courts on Friday, when they head to Kalamazoo, Mich., to take on Western Michigan at 5 p.m. (CT) at West Hills Athletic Club.
