Flames Flashback: Men's Swimming And Diving Make A Run At The Horizon League Title

As the 2010-2011 academic year approaches, UIC takes a look back at the previous year in athletics. CHICAGO - The UIC men's swimming and diving team made a run at a second consecutive Horizon League title, but on the final day, of the four day meet, finished in third. The Flames were led in the pool by junior Brian Anderson who was the Horizon League Men's Athlete of the Year and Swimmer of the Meet honors at the Horizon League Championships. Anderson had an impressive year swimming the fastest times in the Horizon League in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, in which he set a school record (1:37.72). At the Horizon League Championships Anderson won the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and helped the Flames to two come from behind victories in the 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Many records were broken in the Flames 2009-2010 campaign. Luke Martinez set a new record for the 200-meter backstroke (1:52.23) and the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:55.82. Steve Yemm set a Horizon League record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.65 seconds, besting a mark that had stood since 1992. Yemm also recorded the top time in the Horizon League in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. Zach Van Swol broke UIC records in the 500-yard freestyle, 1000-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle. Evan Dunn added to the record breaking trend by setting the new record for the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.11. At the Horizon League Championships UIC took the top three spots in the 200 butterfly. Andrew Schmitt came in first (1:47.34), followed by Yemm (1:47.50) and Dunn (1:49.26), respectively.
The Flames had Horizon League champions in several individual events. Anderson won three events and the 200 freestyle time set a new school record and was a NCAA B cut time. (1:37.72). Yemm took first in the 100-yard butterfly (47.65), setting the new Horizon League record and school record (B cut time) and won 100-yard backstroke (49.74) UIC's 400 medley relay team consisted of Yemm, Will Ikeda, Schmitt and Anderson, who took home first place at the Horizon League Championships (3:17.11, B cut time). The Flames 400 Freestyle Relay was made up of Yemm, Mark Kalafut, Brenden Dougherty and Anderson who also took first (3:00.21, B cut time). Mike Grecco placed first on the one-meter dive two times this season and he took first place on the three-meter dive on five occasions. The freshman finished sixth in the one meter dive and third in the three meter dive at the Horizon League championships. Grecco recorded his one meter career-high (261.85) against Wright State (10/23/09) and his three meter career-high (303.60) against Valparaiso. UIC begins its 2010-2011 campaign on Oct. 23 at Wright State. |
