Howard, Pastore and Johnson Head To NCAA Zone C Championship

CHICAGO- Connor Howard, Tyler Pastore and Whitney Johnson make their way to Columbus, Ohio, to compete at the 2014 NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, running Thursday through Saturday. Hosted by Ohio State, competition gets underway at 1 p.m. (CT) on Thursday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

The Flames enter into competition looking for a spot to the NCAA Championships among the region’s elite. The top 18 finishers in the prelims advance to the championships rounds, from which the top four in the 3-meter, top three in the 1-meter and the top two in the platform move on to compete March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.

Through competition this season, Howard and Pastore were able to meet the NCAA qualifying standard of 300 on one-meter and 320 on three-meter twice.

A junior from Homer Glen, Ill., Howard came away with with a first-place finish and zone qualifying score at the Nov. 8 meet against Wyoming. His score of 301.28 on the one-meter board secured his spot at the Zone C Championships.

A Lockport, Ill., native, freshman Pastore achieved his NCAA Zone C Championship nod when he took fifth at the Horizon League Championships on the one-meter board with a finals score of 302.75, a career best for Pastore.

Johnson was faced with NCAA qualifying scores of 265 on one-meter and 280 on three-meter, and was able to accomplish those scores 18 times between both boards.

A junior out of Roscoe, Ill., Johnson took Horizon League Diver of the Week honors twice this season, eight times in her career.

The Flames hit the boards on Thursday beginning with prelims, with the men competing on the three-meter board and the women take on the one-meter. While UIC does not compete in the event, platform diving takes place on Saturday.
