CHICAGO – Coming off of impressive wins against Green Bay on Jan. 12, the UIC men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams look to get back into competition with a pair of meets against Youngstown State and Valparaiso on Friday and Saturday, respectively, as well as the UIC Diving Invitational.

On Friday, the women’s team faces off against Youngstown State at the Flames Natatorium at 5 p.m. (CT), with the men’s team also competing in an intrasquad meet.

As the Flames quickly move into Saturday, the diving teams host the UIC Diving Invitational at the Flames Natatorium at 10 a.m. (CT), while swimming takes on Valparaiso at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool in Valparaiso, Ind., at 1 p.m. (CT).

“As we enter the final phase of the season, we are still looking for the best line up for the Horizon League Championship meet,” head coach Paul Moniak said.  “The two meets this weekend, as well as next weekend against Cleveland State, will help us determine our strongest line up. We are about 85-90% set on what we are doing, but you never know; an athlete can surprise you in an event they haven't seen in a while.”

UIC’s last competition fell on Jan. 12 against Green Bay, when the men’s team (5-3, 2-1 HL) took a 129-114 win and the women’s team (5-2, 2-1 HL) captured its first win in Moniak’s tenure with a 123-120 final.

In addition to producing several individual bests, the Flames came away with 17 wins from Christian Grobe, Mike Reed, Vince Errichiello, Ryota Kuwahara, Joel Demuth, Mike Greco and the 400 medley relay team on the men’s side, and Veronica Gibson, Melanie Waszak, Monica Pinkus, Whitney Johnson, the 400 medley relay team and the 400 free relay team on the women’s side.

The women’s team has been able to capture the past seven meetings with the Penguins, including last year’s 166-133 victory.  Youngstown State is 4-2, 1-1 HL, through competition this season, with its most recent meet on Jan. 19 against Cleveland State and Wright State.

Through the past 10 regular-season meetings with Valparaiso, the Flames are 10-0.  During last year’s meet, the men took a 136-71 win and the women boasted a final of 194-38.  The Crusaders are 0-6, 0-2 HL, on the men’s side and 0-7, 0-2 HL, for the women this season, with their last meet coming on Dec. 8 against Green Bay.

The UIC Diving Invitational on Saturday will contain competitors from Milwaukee, Illinois State, Lake Forest, Augustana, Illinois Institute of Technology and Wheaton.  Diving for the Flames will be Mark Ciesielski, Greco, Connor Howard, Whitney Johnson and Grace Miller

During last year’s event, Greco set a Flames Natatorium pool record in the 3-mtr and Kristi Carling set school records in the 1-mtr and 3-mtr.  The pair, in addition to Woody Lord, took first place in their respective dives.
