CHICAGO- UIC swimming and diving is set to welcome Valparaiso on Saturday for a Horizon League dual-meet matchup. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT Saturday, January 18 at the Flames Natatorium.
Last week the squads fell short to Green Bay as the men were defeated 159-141, while the women fell short 191-106. Twelve individuals picked up first-place honors, including eight from the men’s team.
Sophomore swimmer Kei Ishimaru had three first-place finishes for the Flames (100 butterfly, 200 fly, 200 IM) and received Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Sophomore diver Mark Ciesielski also had a strong day for the Flames when he achieved a career-best score of 281.32 on the one-meter board to take first place. Ciesielski was named Horizon League Diver of the Week for the first time in his career.
Rodolfo Zuniga (1000 freestyle), Joel Demuth (100 free), John Mordach (200 backstroke) and Mike Reed (50 free) also had first-place finishes for the Flames.
Junior diver Whitney Johnson stunned on the women’s side taking the three-meter board with a final score of 264.97. Johnson was named Horizon League Diver of the Week for the second time this season, the eighth time in her career.
Monica Pinkus had a strong day for the Flames when she touched first in both the 100 breaststroke (1:06.36) and 200 breast (2:24.60).
Heading into Saturday, the Flames have defeated the Crusaders the past 11 seasons on the men’s side and the past 12 seasons on the women’s.
Last season both squads continued that streak over the Crusaders. The men triumphed by a final score of 119-86 and the women took top honors with a tally of 126-76.
