EVANSTON, Ill. – The UIC men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams produced a collection of season-best times as they wrapped competition at the TYR Invitational on Sunday at the Norris Aquatics Center. The three-day event hosted by Northwestern concluded with the men taking third place (632 points) and the women placing fifth (351 points).
In addition to the Wildcats, student-athletes from North Dakota, Kenyon, Illinois and Bowling Green were represented over the weekend.
Mike Greco garnered a pair of first-place finishes for the men’s team (3-3, 1-1 HL), while Sebastian Ostrowski, Vince Errichiello, Brian Sivak, Mike Reed, Christian Grobe, Kei Ishimaru, Conor Ozog, Sean Mayfield, Joel Demuth, Zachary McClernon and Ryota Kuwahara all placed in the championship final of their respective events.
Greco continued to improve his stand-out season by taking first in the one-meter dive with 288.95 in the finals and first in the three-meter with a final of 321.75, an NCAA qualifying score.
In the 200 IM, Ostrowski took seventh with 1:57.63 and Errichiello touched the wall at 1:58.43 for eighth. Ostrowski also came away with season bests through a fifth-place finish (51.55) in the 100 back and ninth, first in consolation, in the 100 fly (51.65) and 200 back (1:56.10), as Errichiello held 11th (52.31) in the 100 fly and 10th (23.73) in the 50 fly.
Sivak produced a time of 24.56 in the 50 back for fifth, 53.25 in the 100 back for eighth place and captured seventh in the 200 back with 1:57.04, a season best, as Reed swam a season-best 21.09 in the 50 free for seventh.
Grobe finished second in the 200 breast with a season-best 2:06.24, sixth in the 400 IM with 4:10.75 and 10th (59.87) in the 100 breast. Ishimaru brought in season best with the top time for the Flames in the 200 fly with 1:54.20 for third and had a seventh-place final of 51.44 in the 100 fly.
Ozog’s top finishes came in the 200 breast for fifth with 2:09.99, the 100 breast with a time of 59.77 for seventh and had the team’s best time in the 50 breast with 27.51 for 10th. Mayfield came away with a seventh-place finish in the 50 fly with 23.71, as Demuth ended the 100 free in eighth with 46.95, a season best.
McClernon was able to take fifth in the 200 fly with 1:56.29 and Kuwahara held eighth with 1:59.02. Rodolfo Zuniga and Ramiro Almaraz completed in the 1650 free for the first time this season. Zuniga took third with a time of 16:14.58 and Almaraz had a time of 17:00.35 for fifth.
The men’s squad also competed in the 200 free relay (fifth), 400 medley relay (fourth), 200 medley relay (fifth), 800 free relay (sixth) and 400 free (fifth).
Junior Monica Pinkus shined for the women’s team (3-2, 1-1 HL) after collecting a pair of firsts and a second-place finish, as Melanie Waszak, Veronica Gibson, Whitney Johnson and Kristi Carling were also able to come away with points for the Flames after competing in the championship finals.
Pinkus broke a school record after coming out in the 200 breast with 2:16.89 for first, she held her own in the 50 breast with a 29.35 final to top all opponents and took second in the 100 breast after producing a time of 1:03.30, as she had the best time for UIC in the 50 free with 24.42.
Waszak had a trio of season bests after finishing second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.02, sixth in the 200 free with 1:51.73, 1:51.70 in prelims, and had a team-best time of 4:55.62 in the 500 free. Gibson competed in the 1650 free, finishing in 10th place with a time of 17:30.62.
Johnson and Carling competed alongside one another in the one- and three-meter diving. In the one-meter, Johnson finished fifth with 243.40 and Carling came in at sixth with 242.35. In the three-meter, Johnson scored 253.25 for third and Carling recorded her best score of the season with a 247.70 for fourth.
Emily Gniatczyk paced the squad with the top time in consolation for ninth place in the 100 free with 52.40, with Andrea Longlade also taking ninth in the 100 breast with 1:06.25.
In the relays, the women competed in the 200 free (seventh), 400 medley (fourth), 200 medley (fifth), 800 free (sixth) and 400 free (fifth).
The Flames take a break from competition until they return for an away meet on Saturday, Dec. 15 to face Western Illinois at the Brophy Hall Pool in Macomb, Ill., at 2 p.m. (CT).
