Men's Swimming And Diving Take First Place In Quadmeet

CHICAGO Ill.- The UIC men's swimming and diving team took first place out of three teams, while the women finished in third out of four teams at home against Milwaukee, North Dakota, and Butler. The men dominated the Fight Sioux 213-84 and topped the Panthers 263-136, on the women's side the Flames crushed the Bulldogs 245-34, but lost close battles to North Dakota 185-112 and Milwaukee 185-114. Winners on the day include Zach Van Swol (1000 and 500 free), Clair Martin (100 back), Steve Yemm (100 back and 100 fly), Kayla Redig (100 and 200 fly), Andrew Schmitt (200 fly), Emily Gniatczyk (50 free), Brain Anderson (50 and 100 free), Will Ikeda (200 breast), Evan Dunn (400 IM), and Mike Grecco (3m dive). "Another hard fought battle against a Horizon League opponent." said Head Coach Paul Moniak. "It was good to see the men on top again after finishing two tough days of competition." Prior to the start of Saturday's meet UIC Athletics honored former UIC swimmer Stefan Staev.
Staev was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on Oct 28, 2009. He was the 2006 Horizon League Champion in the 200 medley relay and holds school records in the 100 breast and as part of the 200 and 400 medley relay. In honor of Staev, the UIC swimming and diving team wore black shirts with his initials on the sleeve. The Flames are back in action when they travel to Northwestern on Saturday, Nov. 14. |
