Swmming And Diving Falls Two Points Shy Of Powerhouse Wright State

CHICAGO- In the 2009-10 season opener, the UIC men's swimming and diving team fought hard to the very last event against Wright State, but came up two points short of defeating the Raiders at the UIC Natatorium on Friday night. The Flames were nipped by the Raiders on the men's side, 122.5-120.5 while the women fell 152-89 to WSU. The junior trio of Brian Anderson Steve Yemm and Andrew Schmitt with sophomore Will Ikeda started the off strong, winning the 400 yard medley relay in a time of 3:25.66. Sophomore Zach Van Swol overtook Wright State's Pawel Grzebala in the last stages of the 500 free, hitting the wall first with a time of 4:41.81. Van Swol also placed second in the 1000 free earlier in the evening. Other event winners in the water include Evan Dunn (200 IM, 1:55.82), Luke Martinez (1:55.74) and Ikeda (2:08.73, 200 breast). In his first collegiate meet of his career, freshman Mike Grecco swept both the one- (261.85) and three-meter (295.85) diving competition. On the women's side, freshman Emily Gniatczyk opened up her Flames career on a high note, winning the 200 free in 1:54.65 as well as placing second in the 100 free in 52.64 seconds. Veteran diver Laurel Heath took top honors in the one-meter dive, and was the runner-up on the high board to lead a stellar showing by the Flames diving corp.
"We showed a little bit of rust, but overall I'm pleased with how we did against a tough Horizon League opponent on our first meet," said Head Coach Paul Moniak. The Flames travel next to Charleston, Ill. on Oct.31 to take on Eastern Illinois in a 2 p.m. competition. |
