Men's Swimming And Diving Closes Out Championships In Third Place, Women Take Fourth

CHICAGO - The UIC swimming and diving closed out the Horizon League Championships, capturing three Horizon League honors on Saturday evening at the UIC Natatorium. The men's squad place third place just three and half points behind runner-up Cleveland State, while the women's team placed fourth with 574 points. In the 200 butterfly the men notched the top three spots with Andrew Schmitt (1:47.34) coming in first, followed by Steve Yemm (1:47.50) and Evan Dunn (1:49.26). Distance swimmer Zach Van Swol was runner-up in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:37.86). For the women, Kayla Redig and Brooke Sawyer closed out the season with a one two finish in the 200 butterfly. Redig placed first, swimming a 2:01.35, followed by Sawyer with a 2:04.31. Brian Anderson was honored with the Horizon League Men's Athlete of the Year and Men's Swimmer of the Meet honors. Anderson won the 50 freestyle (20.32), 100 freestyle (44.44), 200 freestyle (1:37.72), and helped the Flames to two come from behind victories in the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Emily Gniatczyk was honored with the Horizon League Women's Newcomer Award following the meet. Gniatczyk placed second in the 50 freestyle (23.53) and third in the 100 freestyle (51.34) and 200 freestyle (1:50.96) in her first championship meet.
