BROWN DEER, Wis. - The UIC swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2009 Horizon League Championships on Wednesday, with the men's team leading the field in first place after the first day of competition.

The men's squad closed the first day with 113 points, leading Cleveland State (111), Wright State (94), Milwaukee (82), Green Bay (80) and Valparaiso (55).

After eight events, the women's team sits in fourth place with 111 points, behind Milwaukee (180), Green Bay (127) and Wright State (120). Youngstown State (71), Cleveland State (61), Valparaiso (58) and Butler (44) round out the women's eight-team field.

The opening day saw a new Horizon League record set in every single swimming event, and lightening-fast results for the Flames competitors.

Smashing school records in the process, Kelly Hashoian and Zach Van Swol each finished in third place in the 1000 freestyle, the lone individual competition of the night.

Sophomore Hashoian shaved close to 13 seconds off her own record, set last season at the league championships with a 10:12.73 showing Wednesday night, while Van Swol chopped off nine seconds of the record he set back in January, finishing the race in 9:25.39.

Other top finishers for the Flames in the 1000 free include Emily Hare (eighth place, 10:33.26), Alex Webster (seventh, 9:31.19) and Mike Hare (ninth place, 9:41.73).

In the 200 freestyle relay, the men's squad broke the four-year old school record with a 1:20.40 effort by Cameron Seebeck, Mark Kalafut, Brenden Dougherty and Brian Anderson. The women's team of Hannika Schleebs, Sarah Harper, Ashley Simos and Kayla Redig finished fifth with a 1:35.78, barely missing the school record.

The day was capped with the 200 medley relay, which saw the women's team place fourth (1:45.10) and men's team of Steve Yemm, Will Ikeda, Andrew Schmitt and Anderson earn All-League Second Team accolades with a runner-up finish in 1:29.76. Both squads broke school records in the process.

On the boards, Sonia Peterson finished eighth (186.00) and Laurel Heath 10th (199.15) in the three-meter diving finals.

Thursday's action includes the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay and the men's one-meter diving competition.
