Swimming And Diving Ends Day Two With An Exciting Finish
Feb. 25, 2010
CHICAGO - The UIC swimming and diving teams wrapped up day two of the Horizon League Championships with a pair of close finishes in the 400 yard medley relay at the UIC Natatorium on Thursday evening. The men's squad won the 400 yard medley relay (3:17.11), coming back to edge out Cleveland State by twenty-seven-tenths of a second (3:17.38). Brian Anderson jumped in the pool for the last leg trailing Vikings' Berry Thompson. Anderson turned on the engines to pass up Thompson, securing the top spot for the Flames. The relay served as a huge win for UIC as it moved the men into second place with 274 points, trailing Milwaukee by only four points. The women's relay went down to the wire as well. The Flames swam hard, but were barley edged out by Green Bay. The team of Clair Martin, Sarah Walsh, Brooke Sawyer, and Emily Gniatczyk took second place with a time of 3:47.77. In sprints, Anderson won the 50 free for UIC, swimming a 20.32, while Gniatczyk placed second for the women (23.53) in the same event. Mid-distance swimmer Evan Dunn made his presence felt today, swimming a 1:50.11 in the 200 IM for the Flames. Other notable UIC finishes were Zach Van Swol taking third in the 500 free, Luke Martinez with a third place finish in the 200 IM, and Clair Martin placing fourth in the 200 IM.
