Dec. 21, 2001 Indianapolis, Ind. - Three UIC student-athletes were selected to the Fall Academic All-League teams, the Horizon League announced today. Seniors Kevin Brady and Jay DeMerit from the Flames' soccer team and junior volleyball standout Gina Caneva were selected. Brady, a Finance major with a fall GPA of 4.14, and DeMerit, with a 3.88 fall GPA in Industrial Design, were stars on the field and in the classroom. Brady worked as one of the squad's vocal leaders, scoring a pair of goals and dishing out three helpers on the season, good for seven points while leading one of the Midwest's finest defensive units. DeMerit was named to the NSCAA All-Midwest Region First Team for the second consecutive season this fall as he finished the season with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Brady and DeMerit helped the Flames to an 11-6-1 record this fall and finished their careers tied for 10th in school history in assists with 14. Caneva earned the honor with her spotless 5.0 fall GPA in Liberal Arts, while playing a large role for a Flames squad that finished 15-15. On the court, Caneva was an anchor to the Flames front line. Her 293 kills were second on the squad, and her .259 hitting percentage was the highest among UIC regular contributors. She also finished with 29 digs and 79 blocks (11 solo and 68 assists).
The Horizon League Academic All-League team honors student-athletes who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or above with at least three complete semesters at the same institution and who participate in a Horizon League-sponsored sport as a starter or an important reserve.
