CHICAGO – UIC sophomore Jorge Alvarez has been named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week for Nov.4-10, it was announced by the League office on Monday. Alvarez netted the game-winner against Green Bay after assisting on the first goal by Joel Leon to secure the Flames’ program-best 7-0-0 conference record.
With the Horizon League regular season title already in place, UIC defeated Green Bay, 2-1, on Nov. 9 to capture its ninth-straight win and improve to 15-3-0 overall. UIC’s 15 wins sets a program record for most during the regular season, while its 7-0-0 conference record marks the first time UIC has won every regular-season conference match.
Following an assist on Leon’s goal in the 55th minute, Alvarez came in five minutes after the Phoenix tied the game to produce his fourth goal of the season in the 84th minute off a pass from senior Aris Zafeiratos.
The Oswego, Ill., native came in off the bench to record three points with his goal and assist, while making six shot attempts and leading UIC with three on goal. The game-winner was Alvarez’s fourth of the season and his assist tied him at second most for UIC with six.
With the conclusion of the regular season, Alvarez and the Flames get set for the Horizon League Championship. With a first-round bye, the Flames will face the lowest remaining seed out of the quarterfinals on Friday at 4 p.m. CT at Flames Field.
