CHICAGO – UIC redshirt-senior Josh Beard has been named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 28-Nov. 3, it was announced by the League office on Monday. Beard scored the game-winning goal off his first career penalty kick against Oakland on Oct. 30 to clinch the Horizon League regular season title.
The Flames went 2-0-0 this past week after collecting a 1-0 win at Oakland (Oct. 30) and a 3-1 win against Drake (Nov. 3) to improve their season record to 14-3-0. While marking the most wins during the regular season in program history at 14, the Flames have additionally won their last eight matches.
Beard scored the lone goal against the Golden Grizzlies in the 36th minute for his second game-winner of the season to give UIC its ninth shutout, and put forth a strong defensive effort to aid in allowing just one goal during the week against the Bulldogs, as seniors Aris Zafeiratos and Slobodan Aleksov collected tallies for UIC.
The Schaumburg, Ill., native recorded two points off his goal, while taking three shots with one SOG during the two matches. With his third goal of the season, Beard is one of six Flames with three or more goals overall, and has made at least one shot attempt in each of the last five games.
Beard and the Flames are back in action on Saturday when they host Green Bay in their final regular-season contest beginning at 1 p.m. CT at Flames Field, where the seniors will additionally be honored for Senior Day.
