Oct. 17, 2012
CHICAGO – Junior soccer player Slobodan Aleksov has been selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Oct. 8-14. Aleksov tallied three goals in two wins and was named the Horizon League’s Offensive Player of the Week. The Belgrade, Serbia native was also given the same award from CollegeSportsMadness.com.
The midfielder began the week with two goals in the first seven minutes of action in last Wednesday’s 3-1 win over city-rival Loyola. Aleksov followed that up with the game-winner against Drake on Saturday late in the second half, converting a strike from the top of the 18-yard box as the Flames triumphed 3-1.
"Slobodan's play over the past week in games has been tremendous," said head coach Sean Phillips. "It is great to see someone who continued to train incredibly hard this season while not playing a large number of minutes, earn an opportunity and take advantage of it this past week. We are looking forward to his continued contributions as we move into the final three weeks of the Horizon League's regular season."
The UIC soccer team owns a record of 5-1-1 over its last seven matches and currently holds sole possession of second-place in the Horizon League with a mark of 2-1-1. The Flames jump back into League action on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Green Bay.
