Kaleta Named UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week|
Oct. 3, 2012
CHICAGO – Soccer player Zach Kaleta has been named the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Sept. 24-30. The senior was selected as the Horizon League’s Men’s Soccer Defender of the Week for his efforts in UIC’s two victories last week.
Kaleta anchors the back line for the Flames and piloted the stout defense to shutout wins over No. 23 SIU Edwardsville and defending Horizon League regular season champion Valparaiso. Against the Crusaders, Kaleta single-handedly prevented a goal by covering an open net in the 35th minute, and deflecting a shot away on Valpo's best offensive chance of the first half.
"Zach has been a tremendous leader for the backline this year," said head coach Sean Phillips. "With three freshmen in the back four and the last two games a freshmen in goal, his leadership and experience has been tremendous as the new players gain the necessary experience to find ways to help us get results."
Kaleta becomes the second soccer player to earn the accolade as senior Ivan Stanisavljevic took home the inaugural award on Aug. 29.
UIC (4-4-2, 1-0-1 Horizon) is currently tied for second-place in the Horizon League standings - the Flames will take on Milwaukee at Engelmann Field Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. CST.
