CHICAGO—Freshman soccer player Andrew Putna has been selected as the Illinois National Guard UIC Flames Student-Athlete of the week for the period of Sept. 16-22. Putna was also named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week and was selected to the All-Tournament Team after helping his team place first over the weekend at the UIC Soccer Classic.

In the first game of the UIC Soccer Classic against Gonzaga, Putna recorded four saves in the 1-0 shutout win and improved his GAA to 1.00. Putna was able to improve his GAA to 0.86 in the teams’ 4-0 shutout win against IPFW on Friday. The freshman now ranks third in the Horizon League’s Goal Against Average category.

With the two wins, UIC has secured its fifth-consecutive triumph and its fourth team shutout on the season, improving their record to 5-2-0. The squad returns to action on Saturday as they head to Edwardsville, Ill. to battle SIUE.
