CHICAGO- UIC alum Jay DeMerit and his fellow U.S. Men's National Team mates gave it their all in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup final this past Sunday, June 28 against world superpower Brazil.

The Americans went up 2-0 in the first half before the five-time World Cup champion Brazilians scored three unanswered goals to win 3-2.

DeMerit, a defender for the Flames from 1998-2001, started all five matches for the U.S. MNT during the Confederations Cup in South Africa. He was a big reason for two shutouts, including a notable semifinal clean sheet against the world's top-ranked team, Spain, that propelled the U.S. to its first final appearance in a FIFA competition and its best-ever FIFA finish.

The three-time NSCAA All-Midwest Region defender received international praise for his play throughout the tournament. He was also featured in story that was published in this past Sunday's edition of The New York Times.

DeMerit should see more action on the pitch for the U.S. soon. He was named to the U.S. MNT roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup.
