A Busy Week For UIC Soccer Alums
June 26, 2009
CHICAGO- Two former UIC soccer standouts achieved big things this past week, and the weekend brings the potential for even more success for U.S. Men's National Team back Jay DeMerit and Chicago Fire midfielder Baggio Husidic. DeMerit, a Flames defender from 1998-2001 and a two-time NSCAA All-Region honoree, helped the UIC defeat Spain, FIFA's top-ranked team, 2-0 in the Confederations Cup semifinals this past Wednesday, June 24. It was the second straight clean sheet produced by DeMerit and the defense, this time coming against a world dominator that had not been defeated since November 2006. The win propelled the Americans to their first-ever final in FIFA competition. The U.S. will tangle with another soccer superpower, five-time World Cup champion Brazil, this Sunday, June 28 at 1:25 p.m. CT on ESPN and ESPN360.com. Husidic, a UIC midfielder from 2006-2008 and one of the program's first-ever First Team All-Americans, made his first professional start this past Tuesday, June 23 in a 1-0 SuperLiga win over Chivas USA at Toyota Park. The 2008 Horizon League Player of the Year, Husidic played 89 minutes against Chivas and will seek MLS start number two this Saturday, June 27 against Tigres UNAL in another SuperLiga Group A contest at Toyota Park in Bridgeview at 7 p.m. CT (broadcast on TeleFutura).
