Jay DeMerit Named USA Man Of The Match By Goal.com
June 24, 2010
CHICAGO- The United States' thrilling 1-0 win over Algeria that advanced the Americans to the knockout stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on June 23 continues to stir national pride, and Goal.com declared UIC alum Jay DeMerit as the key to the landmark victory by naming him USA Man of the Match.
The article by Andrea Canales points out that "DeMerit was ceaseless in his efforts to snuff out Algeria's attacks."
DeMerit, starting his third straight match as a center back in this year's World Cup, led a defense that pitched just the fifth shutout in U.S. World Cup history. His leadership on the backline allowed Landon Donovan to score the decisive goal in extra time and aid the U.S. in winning a World Cup group for the first time since 1930.
The 2002 UIC alum is the first Flames player to play for the U.S. Men's National Team and the first to play in a World Cup.
The U.S. takes on Ghana in the quarterfinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup this Saturday, June 26 at 1:30 p.m. Central on ABC and Univision.
