May 22, 2013
CHICAGO - The UIC men's soccer team was well-represented at the 2013 "Night of Champions" event that celebrated Academic Achievement. Redshirt sophomore Piotr Lagowski was named the Co-Male Student-Athlete of the Year, while senior-to-be Josh Beard received the Port Center Academic Scholarship, and Slobodan Aleksov was named the Colvin Communications Scholar.
Lagowski, who completed his first season of eligibility at UIC last fall, was named the Student-Athlete of the Year for the first time in his career after maintaining a flawless 4.0 cumulative grade-point-average through his fourth full semester. He saw action in 14 matches last season.
Beard was presented the Port Center Academic Scholarship after displaying a dedicated commitment to utilizing the study center during his time off the field. The Schaumburg, Ill., native was one of UIC's most versatile players during his junior campaign in 2012, competing in all 17 matches while playing three different positions.
Aleksov was tabbed the Colvin Communications Scholarship recipient, as he is a Communications major that will exhaust his playing eligibility in 2013. The Belgrade, Serbia native will spend at least one semester working in UIC's Athletic Communications office next year to hone his writing and professional communications skills before his impending graduation from UIC. The frontrunner was a consistent contributor on the offensive end for UIC last season, scoring a team-best four goals.
All three student-athletes will play key roles in UIC's 2013 campaign. Stay tuned to UICFlames.com for the official release of the 2013 UIC men's soccer schedule in the coming days.
