UIC Men's Soccer Announces Spring Schedule|
March 6, 2013
CHICAGO - Head men's soccer coach Sean Phillipsannounced the Flames' spring schedule Wednesday, a six-match slate that begins with a road game at Northern Illinois on Saturday, April 6.
The entirety of UIC's spring schedule will take place during the month of April, where the Flames will also travel to Butler (April 13) and compete in the annual Chicago Cup at Loyola on Saturday, April 20. UIC will host spring home matches against Lewis University (April 16) and Wisconsin (April 27) at Flames Field.
"The players have been working very hard since the end of this past season towards our ultimate goal of winning the Horizon League regular season, Tournament Championship and an opportunity to compete in the NCAA Tournament this coming fall," said head coach Sean Phillips.
"As a staff we are very pleased with the progress shown on the training field. However, the ultimate measuring stick on how far the players have come individually and collectively is the game. These five competitions will provide an excellent opportunity for the players and the staff to measure our improvements and where we need to continue to focus in training."
The Chicago Cup will feature UIC, Northwestern, DePaul and host Loyola. The Flames will play in a semifinal match, and based on their result, take on the winner or loser of the other semifinal in the consolation or championship match.
UIC is coming off a 7-8-2 (3-3-1 Horizon) campaign in 2012, with a third-place finish in the Horizon League regular season - it marked the Flames' highest finish in the regular season since 2008. UIC posted impressive wins over Ohio State, Loyola, Drake and Green Bay, and saw four players earn All-Horizon League nods, including returners Jesus Torres, Josh Beard and Thomas Villamil.
