Frazier Nets Two Goals in 2-1 Double-Overtime Win over Valpo
Oct. 31, 2010
VALPARAISO, Ind. - Junior Eric Frazier scored two goals, including the game-winner in double overtime, to lift the UIC men's soccer team to a pivotal 2-1 win over host Valparaiso at Brown Field Sunday night. The win extended the Flames' winning streak to three games, and marked UIC's third Horizon League road victory.
Frazier wasted no time getting the Flames on the board, scoring the game's first goal just over three minutes (3:11) into the game. The unassisted tally came on a 35-yard strike. UIC then held the 1-0 lead for nearly the next 60 minutes, before Valpo's Stefan Antonijevic knotted the score at 1-1 (62:58) with a near-post header following a free kick.
The remainder of regulation and the first overtime period went scoreless. Frazier then ended the game with his second unassisted goal (105:47), dribbling through the center of the field, and finishing in the lower-left corner of the goal from 18 yards out.
Frazier's two goals marked his fifth and sixth tallies of the season, and sealed his eighth point in the past five games. He also scored the game-winner with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation last Wednesday against Eastern Illinois at Flames Field.
"This was a great win for us; not only because it keeps us in the hunt for the Horizon League Tournament, but also because Valparaiso is a very good team," said UIC head coach Sean Phillips. "They are much better than their record indicates, and for us to beat them on the road was great for our team.
"Eric played a great offensive game, and his first goal was a world-class finish. It was a heavy shot that dipped from the right side, and was just a great strike. He is really starting to become a great offensive weapon for us - even though we had him for five games during the spring, he was essentially a new player in our program this year. He is acclimated to our program now, and his progress is really starting to pay dividends for us. He's having a great year, and obviously had two solid offensive games this week."
Valparaiso edged the Flames in shots, 15-13, as UIC goalkeeper Steve Purdy made five saves. Valpo goaltenders Ryan Schwarz and Kyle Zobeck both saw action, also combining for five saves. Frazier recorded a game-high five shots, and Joe Radice took three shots, while Paul Tracy and Alex Rickett each had two. A total of five yellow cards were given out during the game.
UIC (7-9, 3-4 Horizon) currently sits in seventh place in the Horizon League standings, one-half game behind sixth-place Loyola (3-10-2, 3-3-1 Horizon). The Flames and Ramblers will face off in the regular season finale next Saturday (Nov. 6) at Flames Field - the top six teams in the Horizon League standings will advance to the postseason tournament, to be hosted on the campus of the top seed.
The Flames will play one non-conference game this week, heading to Madison, Wis., on Wednesday to take on Wisconsin beginning at 7 p.m.
