CHICAGO- The UIC men's soccer team and Western Illinois engaged in a scoreless tie on a cool and crisp Tuesday night at Flames Field.

Playing mostly reserves to nurse injuries and rest regulars for the remaining slate of Horizon League contests, the Flames (5-4-5) posted their third consecutive clean sheet behind a defense that allowed just three harmless shots by the visiting Leathernecks (4-8-1).

"I thought it could have gone either way," said UIC head coach John Trask. "I felt we had a couple more looks than they did. It was a good game.

"We used quite a few reserves trying to get some rest for some guys with this big conference game against Loyola on Saturday, and I thought the reserves did a nice job," said Trask. "I thought Nate Downing did a very nice job, Tim Walsh did a nice job. It was great to see.

"It would have been nice to get a result, but at the end of the day this is not going to make or break our season. It was a good night of soccer."

Steve Purdy made his UIC debut in goal, recording the shutout.

Trask and his team now look ahead to a Saturday showdown against Loyola at Loyola Soccer Park at 7 p.m.

"It's huge," Trask said of this Saturday's match against the Ramblers. "It's a local derby, there's a lot of history between the two programs. It's absolutely huge."
