Soccer Rolls Over Cleveland State, 4-0, For Eighth Win Of The Year
Oct. 8, 2000
Chicago, Ill. - After having its 20-game home winning streak snapped on Friday, the UIC soccer team quickly rebounded Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over Cleveland State at Flames Field. The Flames, who haven't given up a goal to the Vikings in three straight games, improve to 8-2-2 for the year and 3-1-1 in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference while Cleveland State falls to 3-6-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the MCC. Playing in windy and chilly conditions, UIC took little time in heating up as it took a quick 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the game. Seniors Greg Chrisman and Eric Lukin hooked up for the tally as Lukin brought the ball down the left side of the field and drew the defense to him, leaving Chrisman alone for the score, his third of the season, from six yards out. UIC's second goal was nearly a carbon copy of its first with Dennis King coming up with the score this time. Jay DeMerit fired a perfectly placed pass up the field to Kevin Brady who then sent it in to King for the goal, his third of the year, and a 2-0 Flames' lead. Second-half goals by Jakob Stasko and Steve Collins put the game out of reach as UIC cruised on to the 4-0 victory and its sixth shutout of the year. The Flames dominated offensively, firing 22 shots, including 12 on goal, to Cleveland State's eight for the game.
"We got a great team effort out there today," Head Coach Sasha Begovic said. "Our forwards and midfielders played extremely well and supported each other very nicely. We took advantage of our opportunities early and that is something we didn't do against Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday."
Starting goalkeeper Chris Jamal picked up the win, his sixth of the season, as he made three saves in 52 minutes of action. Jamal, Scott Greene, who picked up his first collegiate assist on Collins' goal, and Jeff Kusiciel shared the save between the posts. The Flames continue their homestand on Wednesday, Oct. 11, against the DePaul Blue Demons (0-10-0) at Flames Field at 3:00 p.m. |
