No. 25 Men's Soccer Overwhelms Alabama A&M, 4-1 Sept. 7, 2008
Huntsville, Ala.- Kevin Stoll scored a pair of goals as the 25th-ranked UIC men's soccer team defeated Alabama A&M, 4-1, at John Hunt Park on Sunday afternoon. Baggio Husidic scored for the third time in four games this season, and Phillip Mitchell's first Division I goal started the scoring to send the Flames (3-0-1) to their third consecutive victory. "It was a tough little game," said UIC head coach John Trask. "Our guys really had to dig deep to get this one, considering the environment [with only 30 spectators]. " In the seventh minute Charlie Trout and Paul Kopec set up Mitchell, who sent the ball past keeper Paul Mosuke for the day's first marker. Just six minutes later it was Stoll's turn, who did all the work to find the net and put the Flames ahead by two. UIC extended its advantage to three in the 80th minute when Husidic beat new keeper Boitshoko Pule for a goal, giving the junior midfielder nine points through two weekends of play. The Flames scored for the final time on the day three minutes after the Husidic tally, when Stoll nailed his second goal of the match. Jovan Bubonja made four saves in an abbreviated day, departing in the 83rd minute as redshirt freshman Taylor Kelliher made his collegiate debut in relief. Trask applauded the efforts of Alen Husidic, as well as the play of the Flames' substitutes. "Alen did a tremendous job, and our reserves played well and gave us a lift all weekend," said Trask.
Alabama A&M (1-3-0) scored its lone goal with three minutes remaining. UIC resumes its road trip next weekend at Michigan on Friday, Sept. 12. |
