Birmingham, Ala. - Led by a pair of goals from junior forward Chris Carrieri, 24th-ranked North Carolina downed the UIC soccer team Friday night, 4-1, at the UAB/Nike Classic.

The Tar Heels grabbed a quick 1-0 lead less than 11 minutes into the match as Jay Batt put back a rebound off the goal post at the 10:39 mark. UNC then expanded its lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute as Carrieri fired another rebound past UIC goalkeeper Chris Jamal, who finished the evening with six saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Flames cut the Tar Heels' lead to one less than a minute later as senior midfielder Greg Chrisman tallied his first goal of the year off of an assist from Ranko Tutulugdzija.

North Carolina, which outshot the Flames 20-10, upped its lead to two goals before the first half was out, however, and Carrieri added his second tally of the game late in the second half to round out the scoring.

UIC, playing without senior star Eric Lukin, who was required to sit out after being issued a red card in the Flames' season finale last fall, will meet the College of Charleston on Sunday, Sept. 3, to wrap up the UAB/Nike Classic.
