Three-time All-American Lazo Alavanja joins the UIC staff this season as a volunteer assistant under John Trask, his former coach at Indiana.
Alavanja brings impressive playing experience to his new coaching duties. One of seven players in Indiana University history to earn All-America honors in three of his four years at IU (1996-1998), Alavanja has played soccer at the professional level since 1999. Starting in Major League Soccer, where he played for the Dallas Burn, Miami Fusion and D.C. United, Alavanja is currently doing double duty as a midfielder for both the Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League and the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division.
A three-time All-Big Ten and All-Region selection and a major part of four Big Ten titles at Indiana, Alavanja helped the Hoosiers amass a 75-11-5 mark during his career and capped off his stellar tenure in Bloomington with a National Championship in 1998. The Crown Point, Indiana native was also the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1995 and the Big Ten Player of the Year in 1997 and 1998.
