CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's gymnastics teams continued to prepare for the 2010 season with the annual Mixed Pairs event on Saturday, December 5.

The teams were divided into four squads to compete against each other for campus bragging rights.

Both men's head coach CJ Johnson and women's coach Peter Jansson were pleased with the outlook for the season ahead.

Johnson knows the challenge that faces the Flames for the upcoming year and he believes that the team is making great progress.

"[We're] hitting new skills," said Johnson. "For us to go a little bit further we have to have a greater difficulty. Our difficulty compared to the teams that beat us in nationals last year, we're still behind them, but I'm really proud of what I've seen."

Jansson is particularly pleased with the poise his upperclassmen have shown in the early going this year.

"The leadership looked really ready," commented Jansson after the competition. "Andrea Skala, Christine Girard and Karen Morales look like they've got it down and they're ready to go; they're going to be able to really lead the way for us."

Jansson, who is entering his 19th season as the Flames' coach is also excited about some of the new faces on the team.

"The freshmen have enough talent that as they get used to competing, we're going to field a pretty competitive team."

The women's squad opens the regular season on Saturday January 9, 2010 with a home meet against Southeast Missouri State at 5:00 p.m. The men's team kicks off regular season competition with the Windy City Invitational on January 16 at 7:00 p.m.
