CHICAGO – The UIC men’s gymnastics team released its schedule for the 2012-13 season on Tuesday, as the squad prepares for its first competition with the annual Mixed Pairs on Sunday, Dec. 9.

“Our schedule coming up is a challenging and exciting one,” head coach Charley Nelson said.  “We are going to see some of the country’s best gymnastics, as some 2012 Olympians will be in our gym and we will have the guys that stack up right with them.”

“We have a test meet with Illinois to start the year and then the 43rd-annual Windy City Invitational.  As we work through the regular season, we have a total of six home meets and will finish against conference-rival Temple, last year’s ECAC Champion, so we will have a strong sense of where we are going to measure up right at the end of the season.”

The Flames get underway with the Mixed Pairs exhibition on Dec. 9 inside the Physical Education Building (PEB) at 2 p.m. (CT).  The competition is the first of seven scheduled meets to take place at home, with the squad taking on Illinois on Jan. 12 at 5 p.m. (CT), before hosting the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. (CT).

On Jan. 27, UIC competes in its first road meet of the season, when the Flames take on Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., at 1 p.m. (CT).  The team’s road stint continues with a meet against Minnesota and Nebraska in Minneapolis on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. (CT), before moving on to Las Vegas for the Winter Cup Challenge.

Returning home on Feb. 24, the Flames face Minnesota for the second time as they compete at the PEB beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).  On March 1 and 3, the squad hosts the Air Force at 7 p.m. (CT) and 1 p.m. (CT), respectively.

UIC makes a trip to Columbus, Ohio on March 9 to go head-to-head with Ohio State at 3 p.m. (CT) before heading home to compete in its final home meet of the season on March 17 against Temple at 1 p.m. (CT).

The regular season concludes with a pair of meets on the road, as the Flames go up against Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., on March 23 at 6 p.m. (CT) and head to Iowa City, Iowa, on March 30 for a 5 p.m. (CT) face-off with Iowa.

The Flames wrap up 2013 at the ECAC Championship in Springfield, Mass., April 5-6.  UIC finished in third place last season after winning three-straight team titles.

Nelson added, “This is the hardest working team I think I have ever been a part of and it is really starting to pay off, so we hope it comes together in the season.”
