Men's Gymnastics Names May, Korepanov, Stover Captains For 2008 Season

Chicago, Ill. - UIC head gymnastics coach "CJ" Johnson announced on Monday afternoon that junior Anthony May (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair), Nikolai Korepanov (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln), and Andrew Stover (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) will serve as captains of the UIC men's gymnastics team for the upcoming 2008 season. This is the first time in school history that two sophomores have been selected as team captains. It is also the first time that there have been three designated captains. May enters his third season, looking to make another appearance at the NCAA Championships. Last year, May finished 13th overall in the all-around competition at the NCAA Individual Finals and also joined graduate Tim Morrison as the first time two Flames have qualified for the NCAA all-around finals since 1980. Korepanov had an exceptional season last year, recording a 9.0 or higher in nine of ten meets on still rings. He was honored as the 2007 ECAC Rookie of the Year. Stover proved to be a consistent gymnast in multiple events last season. He was a third-place medalist on horizontal bars at the ECAC Championships in 2007. Johnson believes that his three captains will provide the necessary leadership to help the team succeed. "I think it's great to see the respect of the teammates to have the trust of Anthony, Nikolai, and Andrew to lead the team in a spiritual aspect," said Johnson. "I'm very proud to announce the captains for the 2008 season."
The UIC men's gymnastics team will kick off the 2008 season with the annual Mixed Pairs exhibition meet on Dec. 9th at the Physical Education Building.
