`Forty Flames to Follow' in 2013-14: Jason Gaides|
June 19, 2013
CHICAGO - Sophomore men's gymnast Jason Gaides, who advanced to the 2013 NCAA Championships as an all-around specialist last spring, is Wednesday's featured student-athlete in the UICFlames.com "Forty Flames to Follow" in 2013-14 summer feature series.
Gaides competed in the all-around 14 times last season, scoring at least an 80.00 on eight occasions. The Alsip, Ill., native posted a season-best score of 82.800 against Air Force on March 3. He was a part of eight UIC individual gymnasts that advanced to the NCAA Championships, more than any other program in the country.
"Jason is another one of UIC's true student-athletes," said head coach Charley Nelson. "He's a member of the Dean's List and qualified for the all around finals of the 2013 NCAA Championship. This spring Jason was accepted to the UIC Health Informatics program where he'll study hospital administration and patient information management, and this summer he is training to qualify for the U.S. National Championships and a chance to join the U.S. National Team.
"Jason's a great teammate and that was rewarded when he was selected a team co-captain for 2013-14. I expect some strong leadership from Jason this season and I'm hoping for a great season from him and his team."
Gaides' most consistent event during the 2012-13 campaign was the vault, where he scored a season-best 14.600 on a pair of occasions, against Air Force and at Michigan (March 23). His season-best tally in the floor exercise was a 14.550 against the Wolverines; Gaides scored a 14.050 on the pommel horse against Air Force, and scored a 14.250 on the rings against in-state rival Illinois in the season opener (Jan. 12).
Gaides and the men's gymnastics team will open the 2013-14 season in the annual "Mixed Pairs" event on Dec. 7. Stay tuned to UICFlames.com for the official release of the 2013-14 schedule.
