Korepanov Leads No. 12 Men's Gymnastics At No. 7 Illinois March 17, 2007
Champaign, Ill.- Freshman Nikolai Korepanov continued to shine on rings as the rookie posted a second-place finish in the event during the 12th-ranked UIC men's gymnastics team's meet against No. 7 Illinois at Huff Hall on Saturday afternoon. Korepanov posted a score of 9.0 on rings for the runner-up finish, bested only by Tyler Yamauchi's 9.4. The UIC rookie has scored a 9.0 or higher on rings in seven of his eight routines this season. As a team the depleted Flames were bested by the Fighting Illini, as UIC's 193.050 was not enough against the 210.000 produced by Illinois. The Flames were unable to field a full squad as a bad flu bug and various other illnesses ravaged the team during the week. On floor exercise Korepanov and Nissen-Emery Award finalist Tim Morrison led UIC with identical 8.65 scores. Korepanov also led the Flames on parallel bars with an 8.7. UIC hosts Minnesota in the Flames' home finale on Saturday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the UIC Physical Education Building.
