West Point, N.Y. - The UIC men's gymnastics team downed Army Sunday afternoon by a score of 218.400-213.250. The victory was the Flames second over the No. 20 Cadets in three days. UIC gymnasts won or tied for first in five of the meet's six events.
The Flames, currently ranked No. 13 in the nation, were particularly dominant on the pommel horse, taking the top four spots on that event. Erin Willingham finished first with a 9.550 and was followed by Chris Coorlim in second (9.200) and Greg Gabel in third (9.050). Justin Joyce tied for fourth with an 8.750.
UIC took three of the top four sports on the still rings, with Mike D'Antino scoring a 9.650 to win the event. David Johnson finished second with 9.450 while Gabel took fourth 8.750.
Johnson took first on the vault with a 9.650 while Jody Liebler placed third with a 9.500. The meet was Liebler's first in more than a month after going down with an injury earlier this season.
Gabel took UIC's fourth first-place finish of the afternoon with a 9.350 on the parallel bars. Finishing just behind him in third place on that event was teammate Justin Joyce with a 9.250.
Willingham earned his second first-place finish of the day by winning the high bar with a 9.200. Toby vanAmerongen took second with an 8.900.
The only event the Flames did not take first on was the floor exercise, but UIC did manage to win spots two through four on that event. Anthony Cirullo placed second with a 9.550 while Toby vanAmerongen took third with 9.350. Johnson added another top-five finish to his outstanding performance on the afternoon, placing fourth with a 9.250.
The Flames return to action Saturday, March 18, at the ECAC Championships in Springfield, Mass.
