Men's Gymnastics Edges Air Force, 220.875-220.300
Feb. 11, 2000 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UIC men's gymnastics squad earned their first dual-meet victory as the season Friday night as they edged out the Air Force Academy, 220.875-220.300. The #15 Flames took first-place on four of the six individual events as well as three team events, winning on the floor exercise with a 36.225, the parallel bars (36.800) and high bar (36.500). Individually, senior Toby VanAmerongen's 9.325 on the floor exercise was good enough for first place while he also tied for second on the high bar with a 9.150, trailing teammate junior Jared Grodt, who claimed the top spot on the high bar with a 9.250. Grodt also paced the Flames on the parallel bars as he and teammate Justin Joyce each tallied a 9.250, which tied for first. Greg Gabel helped complete the sweep of the top three finishes on the p-bars as he scored a 9.200 for third place. Additionally, Gabel also turned in strong performances on the pommel horse, as he landed a 9.450, which placed second, and on the parallel bars with a 9.200, which ranked third. Junior Anthony Cirullo led the Flames on the vault with a meet and season-high score of 9.750. The Flames will face off against #16 Air Force again on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2:00 p.m. Vault 1.
