Men's Gymnastics Soar Past Air Force, 203.75-199.05
Feb. 4, 2001 Chicago, Ill. - Men's gymnastics coach CJ Johnson was happy with Friday's 196.15-194.05 victory over Air Force - but he wasn't satisfied. Johnson knew that his squad was capable of producing a 200-point output, but had fallen just short this season. UIC surpassed Johnson's benchmark of 200 points on Sunday as they produced team-highs on five events on their way to a 203.75-199.05 victory over Air Force at the Physical Education Building. The Flames improve to 2-1 on the season with the victory. "We changed a few of the routines," Johnson said. "We didn't want to throw the whole kitchen at them. "This was a whole different team from Friday night," Johnson continued. "We were more together." UIC captains Dave Johnson and Matthew Soucie were the top performers for the Flames on Sunday. Johnson, a senior, placed first overall on the still rings with an 8.8 and was the Flames' top performer on the parallel bars (8.35). Johnson also tied with Soucie for top honors on the vault with a 9.0. Soucie, a junior, garnered another first-place finish on the pommel horse with a 8.7. UIC also received first-place finishes from Anthony Cirullo (9.150, floor exercise) and Matt Musielak (8.750, horizontal bar).
The Flames will be back in action on Friday, February 16th as they will travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on sister-school Illinois at 7 P.M.
