Tim O'Connell enters his sixth season as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Illinois at Chicago men's gymnastics team. O'Connell has been an important cog in bringing in top talent to the UIC program and helping develop the talent into accomplished collegiate competitors. The coaching of O'Connell played a key role UIC sending eight gymnasts to the NCAA Championships in 2005 and in the team's first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference title in 2004. O'Connell brings over 20 years of national and international competitive gymnastics experience to UIC. The Montague, Mich., native has been coaching since 1981, with stints at the University of Michigan and Central Michigan University providing the bulk of his collegiate coaching background. Besides coaching, O'Connell has established himself as a renowned recruiter and leader in the sport. He is a former director of men's gymnastics for the state of Illinois and has served with the men's Junior Olympic gymnastics program. Most recently O'Connell has served as the director of the Bartlett Gymnastics Center in Bartlett, Ill. O'Connell also directs the UIC Boys' Gymnastics Summer Camp every year. O'Connell graduated from Central Michigan University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in education and has a master's degree in kinesiology. |
