INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – UIC basketball player Pat Birt has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the period of Dec. 23-29, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.  Birt started in both contests for the Flames last week and averaged eight points and three rebounds per outing.

Against rv/rv Illinois this past Saturday, Birt helped UIC build a 10-point halftime lead versus the Fighting Ilini, scoring all nine of his points in the first half.  The Flames actually reached their largest lead of 13 points after Birt converted a contested layup at the 3:46 mark.  The Plano, Texas native finished the game with 28 minutes played, which ties his career-high that he set against SMU on Dec. 4.

Birt also played well at Colorado State last Monday, scoring all seven points in the second half.  He netted five of those points in just under a two-minute span to begin a Flames’ run that made it a two-possession game after the Rams had been up 12.

Birt has started the past five games for UIC and ranks as the third-highest scoring freshmen in the Horizon League with an average of 6.6 points per game.  Birt is also 12-of-13 from the foul line this season, sinking 12 straight after missing his very first attempt of the year.

This award mark’s his first career weekly accolade.  Birt was a 5A First-Team All-State selection out of Plano East High School.

The Flames open league play on Thursday, Jan. 2 at defending conference champion Valparaiso.
