Barnes Tabbed as UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week|
Dec. 19, 2012
CHICAGO – Men’s basketball player Daniel Barnes has been named the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Dec. 10-Dec. 16. Barnes netted a career-high 30 points in a home win over Eastern Michigan last Saturday and for his efforts was also selected as the Horizon League Player of the Week, the Flames second weekly conference honor of the season (Talton, 11/26).
Against EMU, Barnes went 6-of-13 (46.2%) from behind the arc and 10-of-18 from the field (55.6%). Six treys and 10 field goals also serve as career-bests for Barnes.
His performance was the first 30-point game for UIC since Jan. 7, 2010, when then-senior Jeremy Buttell lit up Youngstown State for 31 points. Barnes is now one of just four Horiozn League players to have recorded a 30-point outing this season. That list includes preseason All-League members Kendrick Perry (Youngstown State), Keifer Sykes (Green Bay) and Ryan Broekhoff (Valparaiso).
Barnes leads the team and ranks tied-for-second in the conference in threes per game with a 2.5 average.
The Oak Park, Ill., native picks up his second UICFlames.com laurel of the season and men’s basketball collects its fourth-straight accolade, the longest streak since the award’s inception.
