Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's basketball team was ranked 17th in the CollegeInsider.com preseason Mid-Major Top 25 poll released on Thursday evening while senior guard Cedrick Banks garnered preseason Mid-Major All-American accolades by the same online publication.
The Flames, who have posted three-straight 20-win seasons, are coming off a 2003-04 campaign in which they posted a school-record 24 victories, captured the Horizon League Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three years.
UIC is anchored on the floor by Banks, who was named the Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year earlier this season. He is a three-time All-Horizon League performer and is the league's top returning scorer, averaging 18.1 points per game last year.
The Flames are one of two Horizon League teams in the preseason Mid-Major Top 25, as rival UW-Milwaukee is slotted one spot ahead of UIC in 16th. The Panthers' top gun, senior Ed McCants, also earned a spot on the 25-man preseason Mid-Major All-American squad.
The Mid-Major Poll, now in its sixth season of existence, is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Continent, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Sun Belt, West Coast.
